In 1786, five years after the founding of Perm as the capital city of Perm Province, the grand opening of the Perm Main Public School took place, which in 1808 was transformed into a men’s grammar school. On May 24, 1837, the Tsesarevich Alexander Nikolayevich, the future Emperor Alexander II, visited the school.

The old school building burned down in a devastating fire in 1842, but nine years later a new large two-storey stone building was built in its place, which has survived to this day.

Among the students of the Perm Grammar school there is a whole pleiad of outstanding Russian figures: the poet Alexei Merzlyakov, the architect Ivan Sviyazev, the founding member of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society Dmitry Smyshlyaev. Already in the new building of the grammar school there studied an outstanding entrepreneur and the organizer of the Saisons Russes Sergei Diaghilev, a doctor and a founder of the Union of the Russian People Alexander Dubrovin, the Minister of Public Education Vasily Sapozhnikov, a writer and a representative of the first wave of Russian emigration Mikhail Osorgin.

The building of the Men’s Classical Grammar School is still used for educational purposes: now it houses one of the buildings of Perm Medical University.

On June 11, 1887, Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich arrived at the Perm Men’s Classical Grammar School with his son, Grand Duke Sergei Mikhailovich.
At the entrance to the assembly hall, Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich greeted the students who answered together: “Good morning, Your Imperial Highness!” Then the students sang the anthem “God Save the Tsar!”. Mikhail Nikolayevich praised them, saying: “They sang very nicely”. The august guests were keenly interested in the educational process and the grammar school as a whole. At the end of the inspection, Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolayevich expressed his approval of the state of the educational institution to the headmaster. The departure of the Grand Dukes from the grammar school was accompanied by teachers’ and students’ enthusiastic shouts of “hurrah”.
